Getting closer!

This week will see some serious advances in deployment. Again, once the deployment methods have been debugged, we can do more and faster emplacement within Wonderland. We'll publish user documentation that aims to make the process as smooth as possible. The models keep getting better, and the team is meeting this week in person to crunch on process.

Excellent work, everyone, and keep it up!

Exporting to X3D from Maya Binary (.mb) via the Rawkee X3D plugin

I've received an email from the developer of the Rawkee plugin with this very useful information on how to properly export a Maya Binary to an X3D.

Under File, click the box next to "Export All".

1) Make sure the "Consolidate Files Locally" box is checked. - If this is
not checked, the exporter will use the path on your machine in the URL
field of the ImageTexture node. This option was put in because one of the
groups helping me debug the software wanted this.

2) Make sure the "Overwrite Existing Texture and Audio Files" is checked.

Holidays and Work

They don't usually mix well. I'm having to fight for a few moments of work today - everyone seems to be conspiring to help me have a nice Mother's Day. To all those out in the world of Open Source who have mothers to appreciate or who are mothers, have a happy holiday!

As for the work, I continue plowing through the various project items I have on my plate, and will be very happy when I have it all figured out. May it be tomorrow. Cheers!

Where the heck did the week go?

University of Oregon and Saint Paul College Work

This project has been great for both teams. The project wiki has been a good tool and the contributors through the artwork stage have really been doing a great job.

All artwork is done through the Wonderland Format

We are now working on deployment. Art tool path complete, (with some pains)but it is complete.

Deployment is vexing and I am sure glad I know a bit about XML and Ant. Will need now to focus on the Java code. We probably need a programming student on this full-time as my schedule remains full.

Exciting tech for kids and the rest of us

The virtual world is blossoming. Fitting for spring, don't you think? As this May gets off to a somewhat chilly start in Minnesota, the flowers are finally opening, the trees have leaves again, and there are birds everywhere. Meanwhile, in the online world, services such as Virtual Machine (VMWare) and WiHood (kids' virtual PC ware) become more popular, and gain attention from the public. Web 2.0 is growing with all speed, and the possibilities are so very exciting!

Happy Spring!

Configurations... Processing...

Back in the early days of Star Trek, which some of us remember well, there was a computer voiced by Majel Barret. Every time something needed to be run or processed or sensed, the computer would say in a lovely tone, "Working." Sometimes, as I dig into the techspeak involved in the various transformations of X3D to WFS, I feel I need that little voice, and maybe a light over my head to go on, because the process will take a little time to figure out. In the end, though, the solutions always came through, and the ship could go on.

North Star Wonderland

Connected to Wonderland at SPC and it loads fine with the original scene. A little issue with the SoftPhone continuously popping up, but that only occurred when I tried to open it, then close it and not unselect it from the Window menu.

Focus

Project management is a fun, challenging, hairy, stressful, generally helter-skelter thing. To do a good job, one requires a solid team, clear goals, metrics, buy-in, and more. Beyond all this, communication is key. Sometimes things get a bit hairy, particularly when the team has just made a great leap. Let's take a moment, breathe deeply, and refocus on what we've accomplished.

We've done quite a bit of solid work for Wonderland:
* User guide for client and server for Windows
* User guide for client and server for Ubuntu (Linux)
* In-world tests and meetings with and without sound

Latest Review of MiRTLE

Just went into MiRTLE Wonderland and was able to connect fine without any problems. Some seconds passed when I opened the JNLP file, making me think it hung up, but it didn't and connected fine.

As I move around, my avatar seems to jump about. Perhaps network lag or some sort of other issue is causing this?

The Placemarks are nice, they make moving around a lot easier.

I'd love to know when others are connecting to MiRTLE Wonderland site so that I may connect and interact.

UO Cate and St. Paul College Logo

I've posted a logo for the Wonderland work done between Saint Paul College and the University of Oregon.

The image is a little big and may take a few seconds to load.
