The Race is On! Team STELLAR and the Lunar X-Prize
- Forum:
Hi All,
Interested in helping win the race to the moon?
The Google Lunar X PRIZE is a $30 million competition for the first privately funded team to send a robot to the moon, travel 500 meters and transmit video, images and data back to the Earth.
In the fall of 2007, Team STELLAR (Space Technology for Exploration, Lunar Landing And Roving) was assembled to compete in the then newly announced Lunar X-Prize.
I recently joined the team to assist in its educational outreach efforts. We intend to inspire young people and ignite their imaginations with the exciting possibilities of manned space exploration and colonization.
Imagine a Wonderland enabled virtual collaboration space for the scientists, engineers, mathematicians and project managers of Team STELLAR, where they could meet during the development of launch vehicles and the lunar rover. Imagine a virtual mission control where team members from around the world could participate during the launch, landing and roving.
Now imagine allowing students to be mentored by real professionals working on a real and exciting problem. What if students could participate by maneuvering the lunar rover in real-time? How would that ignite their imaginations for what is achievable in their lifetime?
