New documentation coming soon

We will be adding to our documentation soon. We have at this point tweaked some setup information to suit our Ubuntu server, from blank to full Wonderland installation. We will be posting that, and some new pieces which reflect getting slideshows set up to run inside the world, and other small enhancements. Yay!

Someone asked me "why Ubuntu" for our server. The truth is that we selected four platforms: Windows (XP/Vista), Ubuntu (as our Linux of choice), Mac OSX, and Solaris. We have material running on Ubuntu and Solaris now.

Venue of Tomorrow

What will the venue of tomorrow be?

I recently read an article that indicates that touchscreens will eliminate computer mice in the next few years. I also read about the upcoming 12-core processors, and have to wonder. At what point to we slow up, to even out the capabilities? Right now, programming for dual processors has been ironed out, but quad cores are really challenging to program. The difficulty is in making the machine recognize and allocate properly to four different engines. The whole idea of a dozen cores is a little boggling.

Summertime

It's summer. Projects and work continue to be done all over, but the hot weather and busy schedules tend to keep us busier still. Things are progressing nicely in terms of Wonderland improvements. The community of interest is growing by leaps and bounds.

There is a discussion group working on the concepts of accessibility, and has an eye on using existing technology such as readers within Wonderland. Open source, of course! There are a few forums that address platform and software peculiarities and Wonderland.

Viral Marketing and Wonderland

What has marketing of any sort got to do with Wonderland? What is viral marketing, anyway? Are there viruses involved?

Marketing at its simplest is just getting the word out that you have a product or service that you want others to know about. You "market" it to whomever you like.

Will Wonderland go Mobile?

This week I've seen discussion about accessibility and Wonderland, and I'm very glad to see it starting on the front end. It got me to wondering about many other things, including web-ready devices. Lately, I was considering getting a web-enabled phone. There are some definite pros and cons to having one, but I can see Wonderland going to portable devices (smaller than laptops).

Family: a reflection from the holiday weekend

Family is a strong concept. It can mean immediate or extended, work or social or religious or any of many more groupings. One of my definitions of family is simply "people with whom I belong." What does it mean to you? How many families do you call "home" for one reason or another? Stop, for a moment, and think about what they do that benefits you.
